Wonderful music , now with an extra track, 25 Jan 2012

This is a wonderful album full of calming choral pieces by the composer of the recent Christmas number 1 single "wherever you are" . In fact, this 2012 re-issue of last years album has had a version of that track tacked on at the end of the album but please note that on this album it is performed by the choir Tenebrae who sing on the rest of the album, not by the "military wives", so if thats what you are after then go buy the single. The album is fantastic to play at the end of the day and since being given it for Christmas I have played it many times.. My only gripe is that I have, once again, been stung by a record company re-releasing an album I have already got to add "the hit" to the album... but what the hell- just buy the album, it is simply a must have.

This was bought for my second child, who is now 2, but my 5 year old found it in the cd rack and wanted to listen to it, she loves it and insits on putting it on every night, she says it helps her to go to sleep! (and it does, I don't think she has even listened to the last few tracks as she is asleep before the end) Looking to buy some more now!

I'm a big fan of classical music, so I was quite happy to tune in to Classic FM during my pregnancy as it is supposed to help our precious babies' brain development, but once born, she did not seem too impressed with the music until friends recommended this CD, now 4 months old, it works wonders, she happily lies down for some quiet time listening to the classics which have been remasterised with instruments and pitches much friendlier for her little ears. I strongly recommend it, going to try the lullabies and travelling melodies next.

I hated this at first, it is totally pared down mozart- and played it only on headphones to the foetus. Now he is born, we both absolutely love it and often it soothes me more than baby!!!

A brilliantly conceived album of superlative music, 13 April 2000

When I first bought this album on vinyl back in 1979, being a fledgling Floyd fan, I wondered on my first listening: "What have I bought here? "

But on subsequent playings, the album grew on me until I got to the point where it became my favourite Floyd LP.

Not being overly keen on their earlier works, I very much enjoyed 'Animals', 'Dark Side of the Moon' and 'Wish You Were Here' but 'The Wall' stands alone both in its length and its quality.

Every track is brilliantly conceived and the whole builds a tremendous story that fair carries you along through the central character's trauma and descent into his own personal hell.

As one reviewer has commented, evryone speaks of certain tracks (the guitar solo at the end of 'Comfortably Numb' is excellent) but if you allow the music to penetrate, every track has its appeal.

So don't be put off by your first exposure - listen to it a few times and then you'll really learn to appreciate to this superb magnum opus.

There's no accounting for some people's taste. Whatever you say about Roger Waters' ego, the fact remains that 'The Wall' is one of the greatest albums of all time, and a masterpiece. Whatever people say, there is no filler on here - each song is vital to the story.

The concept of 'The Wall' is quite odd, but fascinating. You could do with seeing the film, too. The character is called 'Pink Floyd', and he sits alone in his hotel room, somewhere in Los Angeles. He remembers all the stuff that has happened to him - his father dying in WW2, his over-protective to the point of smothering mother, nasty schoolteacher and cheating wife. Each one of these is 'Another Brick In The Wall' around his feelings. He completes the wll at the end of disc one, only to realise that it is too high, and he can't go out. He is truly mad. His horrified manager shows up, and a doctor gives him an injection ('Comfortably Numb'.) He goes to the show, but the hallucinating Pink thinks that he is a fascist. He sends out skinheads and goes on a rally through the streets, before the trial inside his head commences, and the people from his former life, the very bricks in the wall, come forward to testify against him, and the wall is torn down. Pink Floyd is left as vulnerable as a newborn child.

Great story, great music. There are too many songs to go through, but 'Comfortably Numb' is the greatest song of all time, and that solo is unsurpassed. 'Run Like Hell' is an awesome song, as is 'Hey You', 'Waiting For The Worms', 'Young Lust', 'Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)' and 'Is There Anybody Out There?' All the very best ones ('Comfortably Numb', 'Run Like Hell', 'Hey You') were written by both Waters and Gilmour - Waters likes to think of this album as his, but without Gilmour, would it really be that good?

So shut up about Waters' ego, because he was, and is, a genius. 'The Wall' is one of the greatest albums of all time, and in the top five Pink Floyd albums. You really must own this.

The Wall has an interesting concept and narrative behind it. The story is somewhat autobiographical from Water's point of view, but there are also characters in place that we can all recognise, like the school master and Pink's girlfriend. The idea that we can become emotionally trapped by our own delusions and fears is something many people can identify with, although this album is obviously a personal communication.

Musically The Wall is perfectly spaced, with plenty of undisputed classic moments - Another Brick in the Wall, Mother, Don't Leave me Now, Hey You, Is There Anybody Out There, Comfortably Numb (my favourite track) and Run Like Hell to name but the most famous!

There's no doubt that it's a fantastic album, and if you like Floyd, there's no excuse for not owning this album. I do, however, think 'Animals', 'Dark Side' and 'Wish You Were Here' are better albums, so you should buy them too!

A beautiful, classic film, 1 Oct 2010

This is a wonderful film originating from Leonard Cohen's 1972 tour through Europe, ending in Jerusalem. It seems as if no one had been aware of the cameras on as well as off-stage, so the viewer gets a very close and intimate look at what happened before, during and after the gigs. There are some confrontational moments when fans wanted an explanation from Mr Cohen and the band and even their money back because of the breakdown of the sound system, also many moving scenes which almost leave you in tears.

If one takes into account that Tony Palmer had about 3000 fragments of film to put together without anything but his memory to rely upon, this is just an amazing film. It captures the atmosphere of the 70's, the talent and wisdom of the young poet/singer, the love and admiration of his fans, also the technical and other practical issues the artist and his band had to deal with. The footage of Leonard Cohen as a child and young writer and his love of the sixties, Marianne Ihlen, is heart-warming.

This excellent film is a must have for all Cohen fans and for anyone who has some interest in the music history of the time.

I bought this dvd without consideration due to the fact that I like Leonard Cohen too much. It is pretty like a documentary not a typical concert video I should warn you. However, if you are a good fan of Leonard Cohen you would enjoy it definitely because it is one of the oldest and finest concerts of Cohen. I really enjoyed the DVD with it's interesting and informative concert tour memories. In addition to this, if you'd like to watch the documentary of Cohen with some concert videos you should purchase it.

I saw Tony Palmer present this film recently, and he talked about it for about an hour. The film was made in the early '70s and, as Cohen wasn't happy with it, Palmer passed it to Cohen to re-edit. The re-edited version was shown a couple of times but was deemed to be pretty much a mess. The film was then lost. Recently, the audio tapes were found, together with editing fragments of film. The film here is a reconstitution by Tony Palmer of the original film, using the fragments. I don't know how close it is to the original edit, as Palmer was working from memory after a thirty-year gap. It was intended by Palmer to be a film about Leonard Cohen; not just a record of a tour. Palmer had complete access to Cohen for the duration of the tour and it is a very interesting and moving record of a significant artist in his prime. The price of the DVD is amply justified by the Jerusalem concert sequence alone, which is amazing and very moving, and it left me emotionally drained. It can be argued that some of Cohen's performances on this DVD are superior to the versions on the records that made his name, and I know there is industry interest in obtaining the rights to the tapes to release a CD.

I agree with the previous reviewer that there is a sequence of footage from the Vietnam war that is gruesome, but it is not inappropriate because it occurs just after Cohen speaks about the political meaning in his work, and this was in the early '70s in the aftermath of the Vietnam war when political currents were running fast and powerfully.
